چکیده

[1] Observational analysis and model experiments show that the sea surface temperature anomaly associated with the Indian Ocean Basin mode (IOBM), which persists from spring to summer, can generate significant circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) in the Northern Hemisphere summer midlatitude atmosphere. A warm IOBM can induce a new atmospheric heating source in the south Asia through a positive feedback. An enhanced Indian summer monsoon through the increased precipitation in the south Asia induces an atmospheric heating source there. This new atmospheric heating source generates an anomalous high to its northwest over the western-central Asia, which in turn generates an eastward downstream atmospheric wave train, forming the CGT. 3D Modeling of Wind-Driven Circulation In The Northern Indian Ocean During Monsoon

Abstract The purpose of this research is to design and identify some of the natures and characteristics of high-resolution surface currents in the Northern Indian Ocean. The pattern of 3D circulation of the Wind-driven surface currents, Sea surface temperature (SST) and Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) distribution in the Northern Indian Ocean using The MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) with ho...

Summertime ENSO–North African–Asian Jet teleconnection and implications for the Indian monsoons

[1] Recent findings indicate that ENSO may modulate the strength of the Indian monsoons by altering the meridional tropospheric temperature gradient between Asia and the equatorial Indian Ocean. Here we show that during northern hemisphere summertime El Niño events both colder upper tropospheric temperatures and increased vorticity anomalies are observed within the North African-Asian (NAA) jet...

Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Variability and Its Global Connectivity

This study statistically evaluates the relationship between Antarctic Sea Ice extent and global climate variability. Temporal cross-correlations between detrended Antarctic sea ice edge (SIE) anomaly and various climate indices are calculated. For the sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific and tropical Indian Ocean, as well as the tropical Pacific precipitation, a coher...

Tropical climate variability: interactions across the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans

Modes of tropical climate variability, such as the El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Basinwide Mode (IOBM), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the Atlantic Equatorial Mode (AEM) (sometimes referred to as the Atlantic Zonal Mode, or Atlantic Niño) interact most readily via the atmosphere. Sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropics drive changes in the Walker Ci...

Tropical–Extratropical Teleconnections in Boreal Summer: Observed Interannual Variability*

Maximum covariance analysis is performed on the fields of boreal summer, tropical rainfall, and Northern Hemisphere (NH) 200-hPa height for the 62-yr period of record of 1948–2009. The leading mode, which appears preferentially in summers preceding the peak phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, involves a circumglobal teleconnection (CGT) pattern in the NH extratropical 200-h...
